This poem, My Best Friend/My Worst Enemy was written in high school. It was about my childhood imaginary friend and the monster that lived under my bed.
***
My Best Friend
He’s always there for me,
Even when others
are not.
He’ll never poke
fun at me
He’s never made me
sad
He won’t Ever
Beat me
He mends my wounds
And makes me smile.
I would like you to meet him
But he’s scared to come out.
My best friend
has another side
He ridicules me
He hurts me
He makes me cry
He isn’t afraid
He’ll come out
He does sometimes
And hides under my bed
Waiting for me
He’s always there for me,
Even when others
are not.
He’ll never poke
fun at me
He’s never made me
sad
He won’t Ever
Beat me
He mends my wounds
And makes me smile.
I would like you to meet him
But he’s scared to come out.
My best friend
has another side
He ridicules me
He hurts me
He makes me cry
He isn’t afraid
He’ll come out
He does sometimes
And hides under my bed
Waiting for me
to fall
Asleep.
***
I rewrote the poem in college, it became about my brother's and my strong friendship as children that would sometimes be put on hold because of his uncontrollable anger.
***
My best friend and I
stick together. Despite mother’s
harsh words. In spite of father’s
bruised hand. We will always
help and defend each other.
But then, my best friend leaves.
He is taken over by
a darker entity and no one
is safe. There were times...
I still remember how he treated me.
How he would push me to the floor,
kick me till I scream,
punch me till I bleed.
I never understood
Why he would beat me so
But I loved him all the same
And I would hide, waiting
for him
to fall
asleep
